How to Choose the Right Ratchet Straps: Length, Strength & Load Type

Choosing the right ratchet strap for a job isn't just about grabbing the longest one on the rack. The wrong strap — whether it's too short, too weak, or the wrong fit for your load — can result in a shifting load, a roadside inspection failure, or worse. Start With Lashing Capacity, Not Breaking Force

Before anything else, you need to understand the difference between Minimum Breaking Force (MBF) and Lashing Capacity (LC). MBF is the point at which a strap will catastrophically fail — it is never your working load. LC is the safe working limit you must plan around. As a rule of thumb, LC is typically half of MBF.

For example, a strap marked with an MBF of 5,000 kg will have an LC of around 2,500 kg. If you are securing a 2,000 kg load, you need straps whose combined LC rating meets or exceeds the load — accounting for the number of straps and the securing method used. Choosing the Right Strap Length

Strap length is one of the most overlooked factors in ratchet strap selection. Too short and you cannot reach your anchor points safely; too long and you are left managing excess webbing that can snag or flutter at speed.

Common Lengths and Their Uses

  • 3–4 m straps: Ideal for securing smaller loads, machinery, or equipment on flatbeds and trailers with anchor points close together.
  • 6–8 m straps: The most common choice for standard HGV flatbed work, covering most pallet and plant machinery applications.
  • 9–12 m straps: Used for wide or long loads such as Hay & straw, steel sections, timber, or oversized plant where anchor points are spread far apart.

Always measure the routing path of your strap around the load — not just the load itself — before selecting a length. Factor in the height of the cargo and any edge protectors you plan to use.

Matching Strap Strength to Your Load

The weight and nature of your load dictates the LC rating you need. UK regulations under the DfT Load Securing guidelines require that your total lashing force equals or exceeds the weight of the load in all directions of travel.

Light to Medium Loads (up to 1,500 kg)

Straps in the LC 500–1,000 kg range are suitable for lighter equipment, motorcycles, and domestic removals. For professional haulage work, it is good practice to size up — using four straps where two might technically suffice provides a meaningful safety margin.

Heavy Loads (1,500 kg – 5,000 kg)

This is the workhorse range for most HGV and flatbed operators. Heavy duty ratchet straps with an LC of 2,500 kg or higher are the standard choice. For heavy plant, use a minimum of four straps in a direct lashing or cross-lashing configuration.

Very Heavy Loads (5,000 kg+)

For loads exceeding 5,000 kg, consider whether lashing chains or 10T Ratchet Straps are more appropriate. Chains offer superior strength and durability where webbing straps might be at risk from sharp edges or abrasion.

Consider the Load Type and Profile

The shape and surface of your cargo affects both the strap configuration and the risk of damage to goods or webbing.

Flat, Palletised Loads

Use over-the-top lashing with straps placed at equal intervals. Ensure the strap does not ride up over the edge of the pallet — use edge protectors where needed to prevent webbing damage and load slippage.

Cylindrical or Round Loads (Pipes, Logs, Reels)

Cross-lashing or chock-and-strap systems prevent rolling. Never rely solely on over-the-top lashing for round loads — the strap tension can actually encourage rolling under braking.

Machinery and Plant Equipment

Identify the manufacturer-designated lashing points before applying straps. Attaching to non-structural parts can result in damage to expensive equipment and a loss of securing force. When lashing points are high up on a machine, consider a combination of chains and ratchet straps for best results.
